Exhibit Technician

The Exhibit Technician assists the Exhibit Developer with the hands-on maintenance, installation, repair, and operational support of exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County. This position works closely with the Facilities team to maintain high-quality standards for permanent and temporary exhibits, ensuring they are visually appealing, safe, and provide a positive learning experience for visitors. This role reports to the Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Exhibit Maintenance & Repair:

  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of interactive exhibits, diagnosing and making repairs as needed promptly and efficiently.
  • Inspect exhibits regularly for wear and tear, addressing safety concerns and ensuring functionality.
  • Collaborate with the Exhibits Developer and Director of Facilities & Exhibit Production to assess and resolve technical issues and improve exhibit performance.
  • Maintain detailed tracking records of repairs and inspections, including materials used and repair timelines.

Exhibit Support:

  • Assist in the installation and deinstallation of new, traveling, and rotating exhibits, ensuring they are installed safely and securely, according to specifications.
  • Provide technical support for special events, ensuring exhibits function properly during peak visitation times.
  • Offer recommendations for improvements to exhibit functionality, aesthetics, and visitor engagement.
  • Participate in meetings or briefings regarding exhibit development and installation to ensure technical feasibility and timelines are met.
  • Monitor the condition of exhibit surfaces to prevent accidents, keeping them clean and free from damage.
  • Assist with any on-site emergency repairs or adjustments during operating hours to minimize disruptions for visitors.

General:

  • Assist with set-up, breakdown, and troubleshooting before and during special events or high-traffic days to ensure a smooth experience for visitors.
  • Assist in the inventory of exhibit supplies and resources, ensuring adequate stock levels of parts and equipment for ongoing maintenance.
  • Monitor and report the condition of all tools and equipment, conducting or requesting repairs or replacements when needed.
  • Additional related projects or duties as assigned by the Exhibit Developer or Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications in STEM, engineering, or a related field are a plus.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a Maker space, technical maintenance, mechanical repair, or a related field, preferably within an interactive space.
  • Experience with carpentry, electrical work, or electronics is highly desirable.
  • Experience using hand and power tools, along with knowledge of basic construction and installation techniques.
  • Previous experience with or ability to learn to use technical machinery including but not limited to CNC machinery, 3D printers, laser cutters, etc.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and technical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently when needed and collaboratively in addressing exhibit-related issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with Museum team and contractors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to bend, lift, stand, carry, climb ladders, and work at a fast pace.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

POSITION DETAILS

This is a part-time, hourly position, reporting to the Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

Starting pay rate: $25.00-31.00 per hour.
