Janitor (Part-Time)

The Janitor at the Children’s Museum contributes to a positive experience for visitors by creating a cleaner, healthier environment within the Museum buildings and grounds. This includes upkeep of the Museum restrooms, garbage collection, and spot cleaning, in addition to general cleaning tasks throughout the Museum. This is a regular part-time position for four hours per day, five days a week.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the cleanliness of Museum public spaces and staff office spaces.
  • Conduct regular inventory of supplies and equipment needed to maintain sanitation and assist in ordering.
  • Clean Lobby, Reception, and Office Areas
    • Clean glass doors.
    • Sweep and mop all hard surface floors.
    • Vacuum carpet and floor mats.
    • Wipe down tables, counters, and all other flat surfaces.
    • Remove cobwebs.
    • Clean fingerprints, smudges/marks on walls, and light fixtures.
    • Dust windowsills and ledges.
    • Clean and wipe down drinking fountains.
  • Clean Restrooms
    • Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, mirror, and other surfaces.
    • Replenish toilet paper, paper towels, and hand soap.
    • Sweep and mop floors with disinfectant solution.
    • Remove cobwebs and spot clean fingerprints and smudges/marks on doors, doorknobs, fixtures, walls, and light switches.
    • Dust light fixture.
  • Clean Exhibit Spaces
    • Sweep and mop hard surface floors.
    • Vacuum carpets.
    • Clean glass doors/windows.
    • Remove cobwebs and spot clean fingerprints and smudges/marks on doors, doorknobs, fixtures, and walls.
  • Report any major maintenance and cleanliness issues to Director of Facilities & Exhibit Production.
  • Empty all trash, recycling, and compost bins and dispose of them in the proper manner.
  • Ensure that the facility is locked and armed after cleaning.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual skills a plus.
  • At least 2 years of janitorial experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read and follow written directions.
  • Ability to work safely and follow all safety guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate well with team members.
  • Must be able to work special events as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires the employee to bend, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, and pull continuously throughout the shift.
  • The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 30 pounds. 
  • Visual acuity to read printed labels, instructions, and safety information. 
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction. 

POSITION DETAILS

This is a part-time, hourly position, reporting to the Director of Facilities & Exhibit Production.

Suggested Schedule: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, up to 4 hours per day (maximum 20 hours per week).

The pay range for this position is $19.00 – $20.00 per hour.
