Maintenance Technician

The Maintenance Technician role at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County is responsible for the routine upkeep and repair of the Museum’s facilities and exhibits. This hands-on role ensures that the Museum environment remains clean, safe, and fully functional, contributing to a positive experience for children, families, and staff. This role reports directly to the Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Exhibit Maintenance & Repair:

  • Perform routine repairs and troubleshooting of exhibits, including mechanical, electrical, and interactive components.
  • Repair or replace worn or broken parts of exhibits, structures, and displays.
  • Clean and maintain exhibits on a regularly scheduled basis to uphold cleanliness and safety standards
  • Collaborate with other Facilities team members on the installation of new exhibits or temporary displays.

Facility Maintenance:

  • Perform general maintenance of Museum facilities, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other building systems.
  • Work with the Senior Maintenance Technician to maintain building systems and respond to emergency maintenance needs.
  • Repair and maintain Museum buildings, including painting and performing fixture and furniture repairs as assigned.
  • Assist in care of the Museum’s supplies, tools, and equipment for exhibit and facility maintenance.
  • Assist with grounds upkeep as needed.

General:

  • Respond to emergency repair needs and facility-related issues, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors and team.
  • Assist with set-up, breakdown, and troubleshooting before and during special events or high-traffic days to ensure a smooth experience for visitors.
  • Additional related duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in facilities management, engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience (1-2 years) in a maintenance, mechanical/electrical repair, or carpentry role.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of technical issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools, power tools, and repair equipment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic understanding of safety codes and building regulations.
  • Ability to work safely and follow all safety guidelines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to bend, lift, stand, carry, climb ladders, and work at a fast pace.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

POSITION DETAILS

This is a part-time, hourly position, reporting to the Director of Facilities and Exhibit Production.

Starting pay rate: $20.00-24.00 per hour.
