PLAYOLOGIST

 

The Children’s Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and outgoing person for our PLAYologist position. PLAYologists are integral to the day-to-day operations and overall success of the Children’s Museum. They are highly motivated and outgoing individuals whose primary role is to provide exceptional experiences to all of our visitors through play, program facilitation, and policy enforcement. PLAYologists help with exhibit set-up and breakdown, encourage public interaction with exhibits, and ensure the Museum facility is clean and ready for visitors. The ideal candidate is an outgoing, self-motivated individual who thrives on working with families in a dynamic environment with a wide variety of job responsibilities and demands. This position reports to the Visitor Experience Manager and Director of Programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Welcome visitors & help orient them to the Museum exhibit areas

  • Ensure the safety of all visitors by communicating & enforcing museum policies gently & professionally

  • Engage with visitors in indoor and outdoor exhibit spaces

  • Must be a team player, with the ability to communicate and support fellow PLAYologists

  • Provide educational & interactive experiences through play

  • At all times, demonstrate & model a high level of professional conduct & communication with all visitors and staff

  • Remain welcoming and approachable at all times to visitors, staff & volunteers

  • Anticipate visitor needs, make proactive suggestions to facilitate a quality Museum experience, respond to visitors who may need assistance

  • Ensure supervisor or manager involvement if necessary to satisfy visitor needs

  • Perform opening & closing duties of the Museum

  • Assist in the maintenance & upkeep of program spaces and exhibit halls

  • Model ways to safely play with the Museum exhibits

  • Model appropriate practices for teaching & learning with young children

  • Observe & document museum activity & report findings to Visitor Experience Manager

  • Participate in regular, monthly team meetings

  • Facilitate misc. programming: story time, art, science & other drop-in programs

Preferred experience

  • Previous experience interacting with young children, preferably in a teaching environment;

  • Previous professional or volunteer experience interfacing with the public;

  • Experience leading activities for young children in an informal educational setting;

  • Understanding of behavior management strategies

  • Bilingual Spanish/English is preferable.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate clearly.

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors as needed.

  • Ability to assist with tasks that require lifting (at least 30lbs.) and bending.

  • Ability to make eye contact and smile – repeatedly!

Position Details

  • Hours: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Part-time position ranging from 16-30 hours per week

  • Schedule: Must be able to work Mondays, Wednesday with a flexible 3rd and/or 4th day

    • Holidays* and school closures required, including summer, winter and spring school breaks;

    • *CMOSC is open all holidays except the following: Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & New Years Day.

  • Occasional evening events;

  • Full-day shift: 8:15am-4:30pm

  • Pay Rate: $12.00-13.00/hr

  • Reports to: Visitor Experience Manager

This position requires a mandatory background security screening.
