Created in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2024), Celebrando Culturas Juntos highlights diverse children’s programming and art activities that showcases the rich and diverse cultural heritage of different Hispanic regions. Join us for a day of vibrant fun!

Celebrando Culturas Juntos is an annual event at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, taking place on Saturday, September 21, from 10am to 2pm. Sponsored by Redwood Credit Union, this year’s festivities will include local artist’s from Raizes Collective, including Martín Zúñiga collaborative arts, live dance performances, and interactive experiences throughout our garden, exploring tortilla making, traditional hispanic crops and more! Ella’s Art Studio will feature hands-on activities exploring Hispanic arts, famous artists and folklore. New highlights include an Aztec dance ritual by Danza Xantotl, maraca making , and an experience with Los Tres Chilis restaurant on the journey of corn to tortillas with free samples. The event includes a special “Cuentos con Ritmo” story time with Colors of Spanish. Additional features include Goatlandia’s sustainability mission with a story about chupacabras, Streets to Creeks waterways education, and treats from Fruta Ice Cream and Mama Zara Empanadas! This event is Free to Children’s Museum Members and all activities are included with General Admission; additional discounts may apply.

Event Activities:

  • Los Tres Chiles Tortilla Making Dive into the traditional art of tortilla making! Participants will experience Los Tres Chiles creating traditional foods using a tortilla press, shaping fresh masa and cooking tortillas just like at home. Each visitor to the event will receive a ticket for ONE FREE tortilla -or- quesadilla -or- chicken taco. (While supplies last 10am-2pm.)
  • Tortilla Making Hands-On Experience Engage all your senses with this interactive activity. Explore corn sensory bins, grind corn by hand, and feel the texture of masa dough. Use a traditional tortilla press to create your own clay “tortillas”
  • Aztec Dance Ritual: Danza Xantotl – 11:00 AM Experience the vibrant and powerful movements of traditional Aztec dance performed by Danza Xantotl. Watch the dancers in colorful attire tell stories of heritage and culture through this beautiful art form.
  • Cuentos Con Ritmo – 10:00 AM A lively storytelling session infused with rhythm and music presented by Colors of Spanish. Children and families will enjoy engaging stories that come to life through song, rhythm, and dance.
  • Mama Zara Empanadas Savor the delicious flavors of homemade empanadas from Mama Zara. A taste of cultural cuisine that adds to the festive atmosphere. Empanadas available for purchase in the Wild Zone.
  • Fruta – 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM Enjoy Popsicles from local favorite Fruta! Perfect for a delicious snack break during the day’s activities. Popsicles available for purchase in the Wild Zone.
  • Martín Zúñiga Collaborative Art Project – 12:00 PM Join renowned artist Martin Zuniga and talented members of the Raizes Collective for an exciting collaborative art project! This interactive event invites participants of all ages to contribute to a large, community-created artwork under the guidance of skilled artists. Together, you’ll explore creativity, unity, and cultural expression through a dynamic and hands-on experience. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of something truly special and to witness artistic collaboration in action!
  • Goatlandia Learn about sustainable eating with rescue goats! Goatlandia will also feature a tie-in with the book “Don’t Eat Me Chupacabra” to blend culinary traditions with mythical creatures from Hispanic folklore.
  • Clay Alebrijes Create your own mythical creature using clay! This activity, set adjacent to Goatlandia, features a storytelling element with books about Chupacabras and other cultural mythical beings for extra inspiration.
  • Book Stop A quiet corner for reading, the Book Stop offers a collection of children’s picture books that highlight Hispanic cultural storytelling.
  • Seed Planting Get your hands dirty planting cilantro and pepper seeds. Kids will learn about growing food from the earth, connecting with traditional ingredients used in many cultures. Take these plants home and watch them grow!
  • Streets to Creeks Learn about the connection between streets and creeks and how we can protect our environment. This educational booth raises awareness of how everyday actions impact water systems and ecosystems.
  • Huminidad Providing information about the amazing services they provide with therapy and education.

In Dow Event Center:

  • Nazca Lines – Sand Art Discover the mystery of the Nazca Lines through sand art. Children will use sand to recreate these ancient geoglyphs, learning about their cultural significance along the way.
  • Big Paper Mache Alebrije – Collaborative Art Join in on painting a large paper mache Alebrije, a bright and whimsical Mexican folk art tradition. This collaborative project encourages teamwork and creativity as participants work together to bring the mythical creature to life.
  • Weaving Activity Learn the ancient craft of weaving, a technique passed down by indigenous peoples. This activity will teach participants about the cultural history behind weaving and its importance in daily life and traditions.
  • Frida Kahlo Craft Station  Honor the legendary artist Frida Kahlo by creating your own Frida inspired self portrait inspired by her iconic art. Express your inner artist in this vibrant, hands-on activity.
  • Maraca Making Make your own maraca using recycled materials! Participants will use toilet paper tubes, small rocks, and paints to craft and decorate their own musical instrument, ready to shake along to the beat.
  • Creating Garlands Learn the art of garland-making! Weave flowers together or craft beautiful garlands using colorful tissue paper, bringing a festive and cultural element to the day.
