Immediate Volunteering Opportunities
Special Event Staff: SNOW DAYS!
20 tons of fresh snow will be delivered to the Museum and maintained over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, creating a space for children to explore, build, create, and play outside. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us EACH day - Jan 14th, 15th, and 16th - from 9am until 4pm (or whenever available). Primary tasks will include supervising children-at-play, answering basic questions posed by guests, and enforcing museum rules.
Volunteers in this role help ensure that our guests have a fun, engaging, and safe visit to the Museum. The primary duties include interacting with guests on the museum floor, enforcing rules and policies, answering basic questions posed by guests, explaining the science behind exhibits, and helping to ensure that guests are enjoying their visit to the Museum.

We are always in need of Museum Docents. Volunteers in this role help ensure that our guests have a fun, engaging, and safe visit to the Museum. The primary duties include interacting with guests on the museum floor, enforcing rules and policies, answering basic questions posed by guests, explaining the science behind exhibits, and helping to ensure that guests are enjoying their visit to the Museum.
Special events like Train Day, Time to Wonder, and Snow Days would not be possible without the help of wonderful volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers willing to help with set-up, clean-up, and day-of tasks during all of the special events put on by the Museum.
Volunteers in this role assist our Maintenance Manager and team with exhibit/facility projects on an as-needed basis.
Work Day Projects
Come in as an individual or as a group to assist with large projects such as landscaping, painting, general clean-up, etc. This is a great option for employers looking for a group volunteering opportunity for staff members.
Volunteers in this role assist visitors in Ella’s Art Studio as they use scissors, glue sticks, and other materials to make art pieces. Volunteers will also help replenish supplies, clean the paint wall, and help with general art studio upkeep in order to maintain a clean and inviting space for art creation.
Volunteers in this role have been known to lead families on a nature hunt, build a fort in the WildZone, lead a worm bin exploration, or explain the science behind the water tables and Russian River exhibits. Volunteers in this role also assist with planting and harvesting in our garden beds.
Volunteers in this role assist office staff with administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, stuffing envelopes, and making copies.
Potential Physical Requirements of Volunteers
- Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
- Comfortable being indoors and outdoors for extended periods of time
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time
- Ability to bend and kneel easily
- Ability to make eye contact and smile – repeatedly

Transformation Tuesdays COMING SOON!
The first Tuesday of each month is reserved for companies wishing to book group volunteer projects at the Museum for their employees. Tasks can range from general maintenance, to site clean-up, to special events, to helping install exhibits.
